Ian made love to Claire slowly that night, tenderly. This time it was different, from the first kiss in the dining room back at the rental to the way she’d fallen asleep draped over his chest and was currently snoring softly.

He shifted so she settled more comfortably against his side and savored the feel of her in his arms. She belonged there—in his bed—although technically they were in hers. Either way, it felt right. More right than anything had in a long time.

If she decided to move to New York, he would need to make changes in his own professional life to keep her safe. Before her, had someone asked him if he would rein in his international endeavors for anyone, he would have said, “Hell, no.”

He wouldn’t be giving it up just for her, though.

Not if he were honest with himself.

He’d fought the fights he’d thought were worth potentially dying for, and he’d done it all with the bravado of a man who had nothing to lose. Funny, he hadn’t realized until then that he’d begun to think of himself as expendable.

Nothing, not even the peace that came after a sex marathon with Claire, could change Ian at his core. He’d never be able to sit back and not get involved, but he might no longer have to do it from the front line. He didn’t have to choose anger.

He would make a difference in ways that wouldn’t endanger Claire and the children they’d have together.

Holy shit, I can see myself having a family with this woman.

He smiled down at a still sleeping Claire. Part of him wanted to wake her up and tell her that he’d just imagined a future with her and it had looked pretty damn good.

She moaned and rolled over in his arms, using one as a pillow and his side as an ass rest. Beautiful. Blissfully quiet.

He chuckled.

If she knew what I was thinking she’d make me pay for that one, my little fighter.

His mood sobered as he remembered how she’d sounded when she’d talked about her mother and grandmother. He’d known the facts of both deaths. Bradford was thorough when it came to background checks. His latest report had even included the balance of Claire’s savings account. She’d saved enough to be able to relocate to New York without his help, but she wouldn’t have to.

What hadn’t been in Bradford’s report was how devastating it must have been for Claire to have been left with a grandmother who didn’t want her. Although she’d spoken of both of their deaths calmly, he couldn’t imagine either had been any less devastating.

What had she said about who appreciates love the most? Those who have never known it? Even on the worst day he’d had as a child, he’d been secure in the knowledge that both of his parents loved him. It gutted him that she hadn’t had the same.

He rolled onto his side and wrapped himself around her. If it was within his power, she would never know that feeling again.
